An Impish nature does not tell you where Hippowdon's defensive investment went. Special Defense can buy a turn against Primarina's Water move; Defense can make switching into Mega Salamence less costly. Here is what changes when the item and moves stay the same.
On Kabamanda, Hippowdon uses Stealth Rock and Yawn to pressure switches and create an opening for Salamence to use Dragon Dance. Whirlwind can also remove an opponent's boosts. Its job is often to survive long enough to take one useful action, rather than score a knockout itself.
The starting point is Hippowdon from our Kabamanda example, whose team source is Game8's team guide. This article compares only Hippowdon's defensive investment.
Both builds use Impish, Sand Stream, Leftovers, and the same moves: Yawn, Earthquake, Stealth Rock, and Whirlwind. There is no recovery move, so damage taken while switching in affects what Hippowdon can do later.

Move 30 points from Special Defense to Defense.
Both spreads also appear in the October 13, 2026 battle data. Leftovers is held constant for this comparison. Both builds have 132 Attack, 79 Special Attack, and 67 Speed, so their damage output and turn order stay the same.
All calculations use level 50 and Hippowdon at 215 HP. Sand is active, with no terrain, screens, or critical hits. Primarina's Torrent is inactive. The ranges below are damage from one hit, before Leftovers recovery.
Adamant · 1 HP / 32 Atk / 1 Def / 32 Spe · 216 Attack
Aerilate · Salamencite
Both survive one hit from full HP. The difference is whether Hippowdon can switch into one hit and then take another. With Leftovers recovery between them, B survives both; A goes down to the second.
A +1 Attack boost brings the same Salamence's effective Attack to 324.
A still survives from full HP, but the maximum roll leaves only 13 HP. Losing at least 13 HP to entry damage or an earlier attack lets the maximum roll knock it out. B has more room, keeping 49 HP after the same worst-case roll.
Whirlwind has negative priority, so Hippowdon must live through the attack to remove the boost. Even B cannot switch into an already boosted Salamence and survive two consecutive Double-Edges under these conditions.
Modest · 32 HP / 20 Def / 14 SpA · 176 SpA
Torrent inactive · Sitrus Berry
A always survives one hit from full HP and gets to act. B can be knocked out in the same situation. Shifting the investment toward Defense means another team member may need to handle special Water attacks.
Neutral Moonblast hurts less than super-effective Sparkling Aria, but the gap remains substantial. Switching into Moonblast does not mean the next hit is safe: Primarina can choose Sparkling Aria on the following turn.
Changing Primarina's spread to 32 HP / 2 Def / 32 SpA gives it 195 Special Attack with Modest. Ability, item, and weather stay the same.
Surviving one representative build is not a guarantee against every Primarina. A's result does not cover Calm Mind boosts, an active Torrent, or rain. Sand does not boost Hippowdon's Special Defense.
Physical investment matters when switching into unboosted Salamence. Hippowdon takes the first hit on the switch, then Salamence moves first and uses Double-Edge again on the following turn. There is one 13-HP Leftovers recovery between the attacks.
B, two maximum rolls:
215 − 112 + 13 − 112 = 4 HP remaining
A, two minimum rolls:
215 − 114 + 13 − 114 = 0 HP remaining
B survives the second attack and can use Yawn. A faints before acting even with two minimum rolls. B's margin is only 4 HP, so Stealth Rock damage or earlier chip removes this guarantee.
Yawn does not put the target to sleep immediately. Your next play depends on whether the opponent stays in or switches. The spread buys an opportunity to use Yawn; it does not make Hippowdon a permanent answer to Salamence.
Start with A if Hippowdon needs a turn against Primarina. From full HP, it can take Sparkling Aria and use Yawn or Stealth Rock. This does not solve Taunt, Encore, or boosting variants, so the opponent's other moves still matter.
B fits when another selected Pokemon handles special Water attacks and Hippowdon needs to switch into Salamence. You are narrowing its defensive job toward physical attackers. Salamence may also choose Earthquake or a different move, so the Double-Edge calculation is only one part of that matchup.
You bring only three Pokemon into a Singles battle. A Primarina answer on the six-member roster does not help if it is absent from your selected three. Choose the spread around the combinations you actually bring, as well as the team's overall type chart.
Copy the downloaded text and paste it into Import Showdown in the team menu at the top. Switch to the calculator and use the Reverse damage direction arrow to put Hippowdon on the defending side. On mobile, the arrow is in the Damage tab.
Choose Salamence or Primarina as the opponent and match its nature, stat points, ability, and item to the conditions above. Enable Mega Evolution for Salamence. Automatically applied builds can change, so check the numbers again. Set sand, full HP, and zero boosts; raise the opponent's Attack to +1 only for the Dragon Dance comparison.
